Provenance June 2nd, 2020 - Still locked within the surreal environment of Covid 19, most of the Inuit artists have shuttered their businesses so they may focus on the care of their families.
Master Carver Pitseolak Qimirpik has just released an outstanding Eagle which he carved during this global upheaval. We are adding this beauty to our “Covid Collection”. We began this collection two months ago with Toonoo Sharkey’s seven enchanting sculptures (also carved during the Covid crisis).
This is a special Eagle and the provenance behind it is a rarity. Each carving in the Covid Collection will be accompanied by a unique provenance describing the circumstances surrounding the creation of these beautiful pieces. These pieces are destined for historical significance. At the same time, the collector will know that they were able to support the Inuit during these challenging times when the carvers’ usual supply chain were closed.
Pits told me that the stone is used to carve “Eagle” is his favourite stone. The grey stones enhances the Eagle’s finely detailed features and the stone is much smoother and easier to use.
This is one of the nicest eagles I have ever seen him create. Everything about it is perfect.
This sculpture is an one of Pits’ most desired pieces. Eagle with fish is presented by Canada’s most recognized Inuit artist, Pitseolak (Pits) Qimirpik from Kimmirut. Pits is among three elite Inuit artists in Canada who have won international status. His carvings are found in Canada’s national art collection in Ottawa and in exhibitions around the world.
Pits is renowned for his birds, especially his owls. All of his masterpiece sculptures capture the hearts of serious Inuit art collectors. This adoration and respect for Pits’ body of work is reflected in the high prices the sculptures fetch.
Our gaze is constantly rewarded as we witness the life and death struggle between this particular eagle and fish. We look up to the sky and for a split moment in time, we bear witness to the shared experience of the hunter and the hunted. The scene is simple but potent. The eagle is powerful and intense as he concentrates on holding onto the wiggling fish. Strangely, the fish is serene and appears to emote a determined resolve to stay alive. The lines and proportions of this carving are immaculate. The polish and colour of the deep green stone are breathtaking.
It is very difficult for a gallery to acquire a Qimirpik eagle. Honoured and fortunate is the collector who acquires this masterpiece eagle and fish carving for his/her collection especially with its singular provenance.
