Depictions of Mother and Child are amongst the most beloved in human history.

Motherly love and tenderness is often portrayed in the animal kingdom, especially among the Inuit artists.

We have several Mother Bear and Cub carvings in the gallery.

Esau Kripanik presents us with this pleasing composition of a Polar bear and her cub. The bears are focussed on a distant focal point. The young cub is off balance and seems a bit confused.

The mother bear is shielding her charge with her front paw as she walks toward the impending danger.

This sculpture portrays the sacrifice of oneself to protect the young.

Esau’s carving is moving and sentimental.

Other Mother and Child carvings in the gallery are:

Inuk Charlie’s Narwhals (pg 1)

Geese family by Tukiki Manomie (pg 1)

Mother and Calf Orcas by Derrald Taylor (pg 1)

Manasie’s  Mother and Cub (pg 2)

Striking black Mother Bear and Cub by Tuk Nuna (pg 4)

And the loving Bird Mother and Chick by Tukiki Manomie (pg 4)

All these pieces are in New Arrivals.

The loving and tender nature of these carvings is magnetic and compelling.

This Mother and Cub are decorated with Esau’s signature ... three dimensional animal motifs lovingly and painstakingly carved on the “hide” of the bears.

Kripanik is from a very remote Inuit community called Igloolik where artists have a very unique style. They focus on creating sculptures that are realistic.
