BARNABUS ARNASUNGAAQ was one of the earliest participants in the Baker Lake Carving Program.
The Canadian government established this program in the 1960's.
Barnabus was a print maker but is best known for his carvings.
In fact, he became an internationally renowned and leading figure in contemporary Inuit sculpture.
He is a pioneer in the 1st generation of Inuit carvers and also one of the most highly decorated artists.
CARRY ME HOME depicts a very traditional subject from Baker Lake of a Mother and Child.
This piece has simple beautifully rounded angles and a deep black colour.
The endemic Basalt stone is the most commonly used for carving.
The theme of Mother and Child has been cherished in art throughout the ages.
